This trail starts at approximately 344 ft elevation and drops down to about 203 ft at its lowest point - about a 140 foot descent. You will begin in a gently, shaded woodland with easy footing across leaf-littered soil. As you progress, the trail slopes sharply downhill. Expect short rocky staircases. As you reach the valley's bottom, you'll notice the Forest Glen trail joining other trails, with plentiful rock-hopping opportunities along shallow pools and woodland cascades.

On the return, prepare for a steady uphill hike (about 140 ft elevation gain) which would give you a solid cardiovascular boost with intermittent plateaus offering rest before steeper ascents.

🌿 Terrain Highlights

  • Rocky passages: The trail is peppered with natural stone steps and boulders—great for stability if you’ve got sturdy footwear.

  • Creek hopping & cascades: The Forest Glen run tumbles along parts of the trail. After rainfall, watch for slick rocks near little waterfalls—charming, but tread carefully.

  • Dense hardwood stands: Tall oaks and maples shade you nearly the entire way. In summer, the canopy filters sunlight beautifully; in autumn, the leaf litter carpets the path.

  • Trail blazes: Spotting purple paint marks is a joy—clear, frequent, and reliable guides that keep your route intuitive even at confusing junctions.

🌟 Why Hike Forest Glen?

  1. Short and rewarding – Perfect for a quick mid-week escape or warm-up hike.

  2. Scenic value – The rocky creekside, forest vibrancy, and unexpected cascades provide a surprisingly immersive little nature fix.

  3. Trail clarity – No GPS needed—as long as you follow the purple blazes, you’ll never lose your way .

  4. Connection to larger network: This trail can merge with adjacent routes like Pigs Run (blue blazes) or the Grist Mill area for extended adventures.

    🧭 Tips for Hikers

    • Footwear: Sturdy trail shoes with good grip—must to tackle wet rocks and quick elevation profiles.

    • Timing: Morning or late afternoon hikes offer dappled light through the trees and smoother footing on less-traveled trails.

    • Awareness: Creek levels can rise—skip hopping hazards during or just after heavy rains.

    • Navigation: Purple blazes are plentiful. Just follow them, especially through rooty or rocky segments where the path may split.

Forest Glen Trail is a gem in Patapsco’s trail system—a short, moderate hike with a satisfying mix of elevation changes, scenic terrain, and faithful purple trails. Whether you're looking for a quick forest escape or a jumping-off point for a bigger exploration day, this route delivers a compact taste of Maryland’s scenic valley beauty.
